Nobody would have thought, a fruit as simple and easily available as guava would be termed as the ‘ultimate superfood’. But according to scientists from India’s National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad, this poor man’s fruit has fought against exotic fruits like pomegranates, bananas, custard apple, mango, plums and grapes to win its battle.
The green coloured fruit is believed to contain the highest concentration of cancer protecting and anti-aging antioxidants. Each guava offered 500 milligrams of antioxidant concentration per 100 grams compared to 330 mg in plums and 135 mg in pomegranates. Watermelons and pineapples, the favorites of diet freaks contained the least radical fighting antioxidants.
Dr Sreeramulu, an endocrinologist at the NIN was surprised that a humble fruit as guava could be such a rich source of antioxidants. In days of lifestyle changes, where pollution, junk food and stress are the main cause of free radicals, fruits like guava will help cut down the risk of cancer, heart disease, aging and degenerative diseases. Guavas are also a good source of fibre, phosphorus and calcium. Other than fighting cancer and heart disease, ripe guava also relieves constipation.
