Drink Cherry Juice to Sleep Better

Drinking montmorency cherry juice can help improve your sleep patterns says a new study by the researchers at Northumbria University whose findings were published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Montmorency cherry juice, a variety of sour cherry contains a higher level of powerful antioxidant, melatonin, which aids in improving the quality of sleep as well as regulates the sleep-wake patterns.

People who drank two glasses of cherry juice happened to notice less day time napping and increased sleep efficiency. They also slept an average of 39 minutes longer.

The research was conducted on 20 healthy participants who were given a 30ml serving of either cherry juice or alternative juice drink for seven days, once before bedtime and once after they woke up. Their sleeping patterns were noticed over a period using sleep diaries and actigraph watch sensor.

The improvement in the sleeping cycle and efficiency has been acknowledged to melatonin, a powerful antioxidant found in significant quantities in the montmorency cherry fruit. Urinary samples of the participants who drank cherry juice for a week, saw a a notable increase in melatonin (15 – 16%) than the alternative juice samples.

So, the next time instead of popping sleeping pills, try a glass of cherry juice!

    I haven’t seen fresh sour cerierhs this year, sadly. I bet that cherry juice would be good with a little seltzer, too. Or in some white wine for a new take on a kir!
