Health Benefits of Garlic

There have been many stories stating the amazing healing properties of garlic. While some of it may be exaggerated, recent scientific studies do prove that garlic does in fact have medicinal properties.

The two main medicinal ingredients found in garlic are allicin and diallyl sulphides. Garlic has strong sulphur content which increases its medicinal value. Organically produced garlic is better in taste and health value than regular garlic. Garlic has been attributed with names like Heal-All, Wonder Drug, Poor Man’s Treacle and Stinking Rose. This wonder spice is boasted of having the power to cure anything from flu, cold, cough to even plague!

It is now a proven fact that garlic assists in monitoring cholesterol and blood pressure. Garlic possesses natural broad spectrum anti-biotic properties which help in fighting bacteria, intestinal parasites and viruses. Bacteria do not evolve in resistance to garlic. This means garlic can be used as the remedy for a long time while other pharmaceutical products may fail. It also acts as a decongestant, anti-inflammatory, expectorant and anti-spasmodic agent. Other benefits include lowering cancer risk(stomach cancer) and making you less prone to blood clotting. Garlic is also known to have anti-oxidant properties, especially aged garlic.

Although garlic has many medicinal properties, over eating may cause bloating, diarrhea and gas. To get the best benefits of this super food, it is recommended to consume garlic in both, raw and cooked form.
