‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away!’
This saying has stayed with us for many years. But, this can be true only if you eat the apple without removing the peel, say Canadian scientists. In fact, researchers are of the opinion that the peel is more beneficial than earlier thought. It is more competent in staving off blood pressure than other “superfoods” such as blueberries and green tea. The outer part of the apple or the peel contains six times the amount of chemical ingredients such as flavonoids and antioxidants which provide numerous health benefits, the research has concluded.
The benefits of apple peel came forth when researchers from Nova Scotia Agricultural College studied and tested the peel and fleshy part of the fruit separately.
Apples are one of the most popular and largely consumed fruits in the world today. Peeling them before eating, means missing out on a whole lot of health benefits according to the team’s results published in the journal Food Chemistry.
