Hyperthyroidism (or overactive thyroid gland) is a condition when the thyroid produces a lot of hormone thyroxine. The condition can speed up the body’s metabolism and lead to sudden weight loss, sweating, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, or irritability. So if you are suffering from hyperthyroidism? Then apt medical intervention can treat the condition and a healthy diet can help in easing the symptoms.

Foods to eat if you have hyperthyroidism:

1. Low-iodine Diet

A daily diet that centres on low-iodine can help to reduce thyroid hormones. You may include foods like non-iodized salt, egg whites, oats, honey, fresh fruit, unsalted nuts, homemade bread and more.

2. Cruciferous Vegetables

Goitrogens are substances that block the thyroid hormone production. Consider including foods that contain goitrogens like cabbage, broccoli, kale, millet, bamboo shoots, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, cassava, collard greens, mustard and more in your diet that may be beneficial for easing hyperthyroidism.

3. Selenium-Rich Foods

Intake of selenium-rich foods can help to balance your thyroid hormone levels and also prevent cell damage. Apart from which, selenium is known to produce glutathione that can decrease thyroid antibodies. 6. Zinc and Iron

Low levels of iron are usually correlated to hyperthyroidism. You would like to get plenty of iron in your diet. You can think of including red meat, nuts, lentils, green leafy -vegetables for boosting iron in your diet. Zinc can help to keep your immune system healthy. So, include food sources that are zinc-rich like cashews, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, lamb and more.
